What Channel 28–38 is

Channel 28–38 runs between the Spleen centre and the Root centre, and it forms only when both Gate 28 and Gate 38 are activated. A channel in this system is not a behaviour or a skill someone practises — it is a fixed wire in the bodygraph, a position that is either complete or not. That position is settled by where the planets sat at two calculation moments: the moment of birth, and the moment roughly three months prior. There is no partial channel and no channel that switches on and off through effort. It is either drawn, whole, between two centres, or it is absent, and the chart reads accordingly.

The two gates that make it

One end sits at Gate 28, positioned in the Spleen centre and rooted in the I Ching hexagram Tâ Kwo. The other sits at Gate 38, positioned in the Root centre — a motor centre — and rooted in the I Ching hexagram Khwei. Either gate can appear alone in a chart, activated by a planet at birth or in the prior cycle, and each has its own page describing what that single gate carries on its own. Alone, a gate is a potential, not a channel — it defines nothing by itself. It takes both Gate 28 and Gate 38 activated, in the same chart, for the connection between Spleen and Root to complete and become a channel proper.

What it defines

When both gates are active, Channel 28–38 forms and defines both the Spleen centre and the Root centre at once. Neither end of this channel touches the Throat, so it plays no part in the motor-to-Throat wiring that determines type — that question is settled elsewhere in the chart, unaffected by whether this particular channel is present. What this channel does affect, when formed, is how those two centres behave in the design. A defined centre is described in this system as a place of consistent, dependable function — something that operates in a fixed way regardless of who is around. An undefined centre, by contrast, is described as more variable, more open to picking up and amplifying what is present in the environment. Whether Spleen and Root land as defined or undefined in a given chart depends entirely on whether this channel — and any other channel reaching either centre — is complete.

How it is read

Interpretively, this pairing is sometimes read as a wiring for pressing through discomfort in search of what holds up — a kind of tested resilience, forged rather than assumed. That reading is a lens for reflection, not a finding to apply to any particular person, and it says nothing definite about what having or lacking this channel means for you.
