The Heart Centre — gates, channels and what defines it

What the Heart centre is

The Heart centre is a motor centre — one of four in the bodygraph that generate energy rather than simply process or transmit it. It is also known, in wider use, as the Ego centre or the Will centre, and a reader arriving under either of those names is in the right place. Structurally its identity is tied to willpower and to the making and keeping of promises, but before any of that, it is simply one of the nine centres that make up the chart: one of the areas across which the 64 gates are distributed. Every derived layer of a chart — its type, its authority, its defined and undefined centres — is computed from which of these nine areas end up connected by complete channels. The Heart centre is one node in that structure, no more privileged in the mechanics than any other, though its particular position gives it a specific role once a chart is read.

The gates it carries

Four of the chart’s 64 gates sit within the Heart centre: 21, 26, 40 and 51. A gate is a fixed position on the wheel rather than an action a person takes — it is active in a chart only if a planet occupied its degree range at one of the two moments a chart is calculated from, the moment of birth and the moment roughly three months prior. On its own, an activated gate is a potential rather than a definition. It does nothing to the chart’s structure until its partner gate, at the other end of one of its channels, is also activated — only then does a channel complete and a connection form.

What defines it

The Heart centre is defined when a complete channel — both of its gates activated — links it to another centre. It is undefined when no complete channel reaches it but at least one of its gates is nonetheless activated, and it is open when none of its gates are activated at all. In everyday use, "open" and "undefined" tend to get used as if they were the same thing; structurally they are not. Four channels have one end in the Heart centre, and each requires both its gates before it defines anything: 21–45 reaches the Throat, 25–51 reaches the G centre, 26–44 reaches the Spleen, and 37–40 reaches the Solar Plexus. A chart in which the Heart centre is defined is eligible, structurally, to carry Ego authority — though that depends on the fixed hierarchy of authorities, which places Solar Plexus first, then Sacral, then Spleen, then Heart, then G.

How it is read

Within the system’s own interpretive layer, a defined Heart centre is described as a consistent, dependable way that part of the chart tends to operate, while an undefined or open one is described as more variable, more responsive to what is around it. This is offered here as the system’s account, not as a tested claim, and it is a lens for reflection rather than a statement about any particular person. Which of the nine centres are defined in a given chart is not a matter of interpretation at all — it follows directly from a birth moment, and can be checked, free, wherever a chart is calculated.
