Emotional Authority
What emotional authority is
Authority, in this system, is not the same as strategy. Strategy tells you how to move through the world — how opportunities are meant to reach you, how you’re built to respond. Authority is narrower and more personal: it’s the actual place inside the chart where a yes or no gets decided, once an opportunity or question is in front of you. Two people can share a type and a strategy and still decide in completely different ways, because their authority sits in different places.
Emotional authority in the bodygraph
Emotional authority is carried by the Solar Plexus centre, which is unusual among the centres in that it functions as both a motor and an awareness centre. It doesn’t hold a single, static feeling the way some centres hold a fixed quality. Instead it runs as a wave — rising and falling, moving through states rather than settling on one. The awareness this centre offers is real, but it isn’t available as a snapshot. It’s available as a pattern, visible only once enough of the wave has passed to see its shape. That’s the whole character of this kind of knowing: it’s not wrong in the moment, it’s simply incomplete in the moment.
How a chart comes to have it
The engine that builds a chart doesn’t guess at authority — it reads the defined centres and applies a fixed order of precedence. Solar Plexus sits first in that order. If it’s defined, it outranks every other centre in the chart, regardless of what else is defined alongside it — Sacral, Spleen, Heart, G, whatever else lights up simply doesn’t get to speak first. Only when Solar Plexus is open does the engine move down the list to the next defined centre in sequence, and only when none of the five listed centres are defined does a chart land on Mental authority, with a fully open chart landing on Lunar.
The seven-step hierarchy
- 1EmotionalSolar Plexus centre
- 2SacralSacral centre
- 3SplenicSpleen centre
- 4Ego — “heart authority”Heart centre
- 5Self-ProjectedG centre
- 6Lunarno centres defined
- 7Mental — “the sounding board”definition above the Throat only
This is topology, not temperament — a checkable fact about which centre has colour in it, not a personality reading. Emotional authority can turn up in Generators, Manifesting Generators, Manifestors and Projectors; which of these types you are shapes how you’re meant to engage the world, but it’s the definition of the Solar Plexus that determines that, once engaged, the decision itself runs through the wave.
Deciding with it, lived
The chart tool’s own phrase for this is blunt and useful: wait out the wave, because clarity comes over time, not in the moment. In an ordinary week that might mean someone offers you a project on a Tuesday afternoon, and everything in you wants to answer straight away — the excitement is real, the pull is real, but it’s only Tuesday’s version of the answer. Sleeping on it, letting a day or two pass, checking back in when the initial charge has settled, is what honouring this authority tends to look like. A decision taken well often has that shape: enthusiasm on day one, a quieter and slightly different clarity by day three, and a yes or no that holds even after the feeling has moved on.
A decision taken too fast usually happens under pressure — someone waiting on the phone, a deadline that feels immovable, a conversation that seems to demand a verdict right now. Saying yes in that moment because the alternative feels unbearable is the first small sign of overriding this authority. The tell is subtle: not a dramatic regret, but a nagging sense a few days later that the answer would have been different with more time, and a reluctance to admit that it already was.
Living around it
Sharing a kitchen, a team or a life with someone who decides this way asks for a particular kind of patience — not indefinite patience, just enough to let a real answer form instead of a hurried one. It can be frustrating for someone with faster authority to hear "I’ll tell you tomorrow" about something that feels simple to them, and it can be just as frustrating for the emotional person to be pushed for an answer before the wave has settled. What tends to help is treating the delay as information rather than avoidance — the answer is coming, it’s just not here yet.
None of this holds much meaning in isolation, though. Authority only makes full sense read alongside the rest of a chart — the type it belongs to, the centres around it, the profile carrying it through the world.
